What is Alcoholism?

Alcoholism, or addiction to alcohol, is defined as a chronic, relapsing disorder. It is described as an individual who has a preoccupation with alcohol and an inability to control one’s drinking. Addiction to alcohol is when a person prioritizes alcohol consumption above all else and chooses to abuse alcohol with no regard for the detrimental consequences of one’s actions. Every person is different and may exhibit varying levels and distinctive signs and symptoms when it comes to alcoholism. Alcoholism, if left untreated can result in severe long-term physical and emotional consequences.

Signs + Symptoms of Alcohol Addiction

There is a common misconception that the signs of alcoholism are immediately and easily noticeable in everyone. While eventually, in many cases, this can be true, there are certain warning signs that may take longer to surface in certain individuals. Below are some examples of common signs of alcoholism:

  •      Alcohol tolerance
  •      Inability to control alcohol intake
  •      Blacking out
  •      Depression
  •      Mood swing

It is highly common for people struggling with alcoholism to suffer in all areas of one’s life. Socially, a person will likely choose to surround oneself with other individuals who are heavy drinkers and allow those people in one’s life who do not prioritize drinking, to fall by the wayside. People who suffer from alcoholism will commonly exhaust their finances to support their drinking habits. Additionally, it is highly common for individuals to make dangerous choices when intoxicated (i.e. driving while drunk), which can result in a plethora of legal complications. Alcoholism is a disease, and it is important to remember that though these signs may seem shocking, the fault is not entirely that of the alcoholic, as the disease is largely at play. If left untreated, alcoholism can result in a myriad of dangerous and long-term effects, and in some cases death.

There are a number of symptoms an individual may experience as a result of alcohol abuse. Some of the possible symptoms can include any combination of the following:

  •      Lowered inhibitions
  •      Burry vision
  •      Restlessness
  •      Diminished reaction time
  •      Vision damage
  •      Loss of appetite
  •      Poor hygiene practices

Treatment Options For Alcoholism

Following detox, it is recommended that a person go to some form of substance abuse or addiction treatment program, and after the successful completion of a treatment program, the person needs to maintain their sobriety. It is important to remember that recovering from alcohol addiction is possible, and there are many support systems in place to help you achieve and maintain sobriety.
